ActiveDB as the operating system for the living digital twin

7 reading time, updated on 05.12.2023

The digital twin opens up previously unimagined possibilities for companies in terms of digitalization and optimization. Imagine having an exact digital copy of a real product, system or process. However, this copy is not a static snapshot, but a dynamic image that reacts to changes in real time and at the same time provides all the functionalities of the real component.

Find out from us how ActiveDB can open up completely new areas of business for your company with these living digital twins.

  • How ActiveDB was created and became the operating system of the living digital twin
  • What possibilities ActiveDB offers you

1.

Industry in transition

The term digital twin became established at the beginning of the 2010s. This is a precise digital representation of a physical product, plant or process. With ActiveDB, bill-X developed the digital twin from the original static model into something dynamic that is brought to life in a digital ecosystem (metaverse).

2.

The birth of the living digital twin

In the current general understanding, the digital twin essentially contains static data on a product. The Industrial Digital Twin Association (IDTA) is developing the AAS (Administration Shell) as the standard for these digital twins. The AAS is a good basis for using the digital twin for applications based on ActiveDB. The AAS as a description of the objects in the ActiveDB therefore ensures the exchange of data across company boundaries. However, in order to place the living digital twin at the center of all applications, extensions to the AAS are necessary. Examples of this include functions and links.

Another decisive step for us in the direction of living digital twins was the integration of sensors and IoT devices into physical objects and systems. This made it possible for us to collect data from the real world in real time and transfer it to the digital twin. This creates digital twins that not only contain static information, but can also actively change and adapt.

Each record of a physical asset or process constantly expands and updates the lifecycle record of a digital twin in ActiveDB. This data can come from ERP systems, sensors, IoT devices, machine controls and other sources.

Our extension of the traditional asset administration shell can also react in real time to changes in the real world and provide comprehensive insights. Furthermore, the living digital twins of our ActiveDB offer the possibility to map the functions of the component and make them available to other systems.

The use of the living digital twin

Living Digital Twins (LDZs) play a crucial role in today’s industry. They offer companies the opportunity to transfer their physical assets and processes into the digital world and reap the benefits of real-time analysis and optimization. Here are some of the key reasons why this is so important:
