In practice, an integrated QR code – or an RFID chip – makes the makes the identification digital. Where previously an analog, human-readable identification provided some core information, with the digital identification a simple scan of the code via smartphone opens up access to all the device’s information and certificates.

The digital identification is the solution to manufacturers’ challenge of transporting the growing amount of basic information for the product in accordance with global labeling requirements, user-friendly and legally compliant to the customer. Once delivered, analog information is rarely updated. Printed documentation supplied en masse for the same products ends up in the trash. In contrast, the digital identification can be updated at any time if changes are made to the product or software is updated during maintenance work. Complete digitization of paper documentation means a major increase in profitability and is resource-saving. For example, two euros can be saved for each manual that is eliminated. With 400,000 devices, this means an improvement in earnings of 800,000 euros. In addition, the CO₂ footprint is reduced by avoiding printing, transport and disposal.
